Tiananmen Square Case Study (Module 3)

Context: Team
Focus: Comprehensive

This is a team project with a final written assignment.

1. Study:
  • Individually, re-read One World Two Minds by Denis Lane pp. 4-24.
  • Individually, re-read Reflections on Leadership in China.
  • Individually, read China Wakes by Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl Wudunn pp. 77-91.
  • In your team, watch Moving the Mountain: A Personal Account of the True Story of Tiananmen Square.
2. Analysis:
  • Now, using the various models of leadership that you know, please analyse the leadership that was demonstrated by both the student movement leaders and the government leaders. Please look for elements of both good and bad leadership demonstrated by both sides.
  • In your analysis suggest ways that each side could have done better. Be very careful to be sensitive to issues related to Chinese culture. Do not impose a Western mindset on your interpretation of this event.
  • As you discuss the event, please be sensitive to the Chinese brethren in your midst. This event is a profound part of their recent national history. Please do not just “blast” the government leaders.
3. Write a 800-1000 word team paper that summarizes your findings.
4. When all the final papers are finished, each team should give a verbal presentation of their findings to the whole cohort, ending with a cohort discussion.
