Preparation: Get a piece of poster board or cardboard for each child, corn syrup and food coloring.
Exercise:
1. (Mentor or Parent & Child ) S – Read: Colossians 3:20
Mentor Asks: Is it easy or hard for you to live out this Scripture? Explain. Why does this please the Lord? Do: Pour some corn syrup onto a piece of poster board and touch it, showing the kids that it’s sticky.
2. (Mentor & Child) I – Sticky Situations
Mentors teach: Sometimes we find ourselves in “sticky” situations. When parents give you instructions they expect you to obey them. What happens when your parents trust you to do something but your friends want you to do something differently? For example: Your parents may trust you to be home by yourself after school and ask you to do the dishes and get your homework done. But your friend calls you to play soccer. You have to decide whether to obey your parents or risk having your friend think you are boring. What do you do? This is a “sticky” situation.
Mentor Asks: Is there a “sticky” situation that you encountered recently? What did you decide to do? Did you obey your parents? (Give kid(s) time to share).
3. Activity and Prayer –S/E
Give the child or children each a poster board and pour some corn syrup on each one. Have each child spread the syrup all over the paper while they silently pray to God about situations when it’s hard to obey their parents. Remind them that this is not a time for silliness but an opportunity to really talk to God about obedience.Add drops of food coloring to each poster board as each child continues their prayer time with God. They should ask God to help them obey their parents.
Mentor or Parent Teach: Obeying your parents is sometimes sticky, and you might get into some messes, but it pleases God when you obey. And……it’s sweet! As you taste your fingers you can tell how sweet the syrup is! This will remind you that it pleases God when you obey your parents! (Adults can help each child clean their hands.)
